IKEA Desk Hack
for kids
Once upon a time, 10 years ago, we thought these red side tables were so cute! For the past couple of years, I’ve kept them out of sight waiting until I had the time and motivation to revamp them.
When Aria started showing interest in coloring, around maybe 14 months, I figured it was the perfect time to finally execute this DIY hack.

Materials Needed:
Once you have those materials, you’re ready to get started!
Execute Hack:
- IKEA LACK side table. You can usually find this table for $0-$5 on Facebook Marketplace if you don’t want to buy it for $10 at IKEA.
- 16” or 18” furniture legs. I used these 16” hairpin legs* from Amazon. 18” legs will work best if you will be using a regular kid sized chair, but Aria likes sitting in the short IKEA stool. So, that’s why I decided on the 16” legs. They were also much cheaper than the 18” legs.
- Contact paper. I used one roll of this marble contact paper* from Amazon.
- Box cutter or scissors
- Gift card for smoothing
Once you have those materials, you’re ready to get started!
Execute Hack:
- Cut contact paper to cover the majority of table’s surface and to fold over/under the table at least an inch. You will need to overlap two pieces of contact paper a little to cover the whole table top.
- Clean the surface with a cleaner of your choice and a microfiber towel.
- Peel and stick the contact paper onto the surface gradually while using the gift card to apply the paper as smooth as possible. It’s really difficult to not get a few bubbles during this process. So, don’t stress yourself out if there are a couple of bubbles. Just move on.
- For the corners, cut the paper vertically down one corner and apply one side of the cut paper over the edge and under the table. Apply and cut the remaining paper on the other side accordingly to cover the rest of the corner/edge.
- Screw the legs into the bottom of the table and wala! You are done!
UPDATE
We switched the legs to these* shorter ones so the girls can sit on the floor while they read and play.

IKEA Desk Hack
I think I had this IKEA desk since college. I remember buying it because it was the cheapest desk at IKEA lol. It had sturdy, but ugly metal legs and the surface was a wood-look laminate material. I was ready to list the desk online until we recently decided to get a computer so that I can work from home sometimes and for Adam to use for gaming. No way was I going to buy a new desk! This desk hack is the exact same as the previous one I did for Aria.

Materials Needed:
- IKEA LACK desk or any old desk you can find for free/minimal cost. Again, Facebook Marketplace is the best place to find furniture to hack.
- 28” or 30” furniture legs. I used these 28” hairpin legs* from Amazon. We decided to use 28” legs for ergonomic purposes since I’m short.
- Contact paper. I used two rolls of this wood-look contact paper* from Amazon. It matches the “wood” on our dresser and night stands perfectly! I looked at customer photos to find the best match. This desk would also look sooo good with the marble contact paper* that I used for Aria’s desk.
